Why Door Hardware Accounts for 75% of the UK Door & Window Fittings Market

by Anne Williams

The UK door and window fittings market is estimated to be worth around £638m in 2025, but the distribution of value across the sector is far from even. One of the most striking structural characteristics of the market is the dominance of door hardware, which accounts for approximately 75% of total market value, while fittings associated with windows represent only about 25%. Although windows are installed in large volumes across residential and commercial buildings, the hardware required for doors typically commands significantly higher value.

One of the main reasons for this imbalance is the greater complexity and specification requirements of door hardware. Doors are subject to higher levels of stress and more frequent use than windows, meaning the components used must be designed to withstand greater mechanical loads and long-term wear. As a result, doors often incorporate multiple hardware elements including locks, cylinders, handles, hinges and sometimes door closers or security accessories. Modern external doors frequently feature multi-point locking systems, which are significantly more complex and expensive than the simpler locking mechanisms typically used in windows, such as espagnolette locks or shoot bolts.

Security Requirements Elevate Door Hardware Costs

Security is another key factor driving the higher value of door hardware. External doors represent the primary entry point to buildings and therefore play a crucial role in protecting homes and commercial premises from intrusion. This has driven demand for more advanced locking technologies, including anti-snap cylinders, reinforced locking systems and enhanced security handles. In recent years there has also been growing interest in electronic and smart locking systems, particularly in higher-end residential developments and commercial buildings. Major global suppliers such as ASSA ABLOY and Allegion continue to invest heavily in digital access solutions, reflecting a broader shift towards integrated access control technologies.

Regulatory Standards Increase Door Hardware Specification

Regulation also contributes to the higher value of door hardware compared with window fittings. In many commercial and public buildings, doors must comply with strict safety requirements relating to fire protection, accessibility and emergency escape. This often requires the installation of specialised hardware such as fire-rated hinges, door closers, panic bars and emergency exit devices, all of which add to the overall value of door fittings. Windows, while subject to certain safety and ventilation requirements, generally require fewer specialised hardware components.

Design and Aesthetic Choices Boost Door Hardware Spend

Design considerations also play a role in shaping market value. In residential properties, the front door is often seen as a key design feature that contributes to the overall appearance and character of a home. As a result, homeowners frequently choose higher-quality handles, decorative finishes and architectural ironmongery to enhance the visual appeal of entrance doors. This trend towards premium design options can further increase the value of door hardware.

Taken together, these factors – higher mechanical demands, greater security requirements, regulatory obligations and design considerations—mean that doors typically generate significantly higher hardware value per installation than windows. Even though windows may represent a large share of total unit volumes, door fittings continue to dominate the market in value terms. As security expectations rise and new technologies such as smart access systems continue to develop, door hardware is likely to remain the largest segment of the UK door and window fittings market for the foreseeable future.
