Selective tendering, also known as restricted tendering, is a method in which only suppliers that have been invited by the buyer can tender for the contract. Buyers will often select suppliers based on the suitability of a project, or have experience within similar projects in terms of size and difficulty. This process requires a buyer to compile a list of suppliers before the invite is submitted.
This method is selected when buyers are seeking specialised or intricate services. Selective tendering is a much faster process compared to open tendering, which provides less wasted time and resource. This method does not require pre-qualification process as the buyer will have filtered out the desired suppliers before sending the invitation.
Selective tendering builds lists may exclude smaller companies attempting to establish themselves in the industry or within specific contracts.
