What is an architect?
Architects are responsible for the technical, functional, design, and economic planning of buildings and the alterations required.
What education is required to be an architect in the UK?
Architects require several steps of formal education which includes:
• 5 year degree recognised by the Architects Registration Board
• Practical work experience
• Practical training
• Qualifying exam
The degree has a split of 3 parts.
Part 1 is responsible for developing main architectural skills which is made up of an undergraduate degree time period. Work experience is required as the Part 1 section of the degree. This year is taken outside of the studying aspect of the degree. The employer, mentor, and advisor will record the experience with RIBA’s Professional Experience and Development Record.
Part 2 extends knowledge in finer detail and prepares for obtaining awards such as a Bachelors of Architecture or a Diploma or Master of Architecture.
Following the completion of part two, 2 years of experience is required to enter Part 3. Part 3 is the final stage in which a written and oral examination is required. Years of work experience is observed as well.
