SSL encryption (Secure Socket Layer) is an encryption standard for data transmission.
The term SSL is often referred to as the older name for the protocol, the name has since evolved to TLS (Transport Layer Security). Both SSL and TSL are used to create a secure connection between servers and clients. The encryption protects the information against unauthorised access and external attacks or influences. It is only the transmission path that is protected, not the data itself, so this must be taken into account by trustworthy websites who want to work with this protocol.
