Each month Barbour ABI reports on the top contractor activity within the UK.

This month, a joint venture held the top spot for the largest construction project awarded in June 2019. The contractors included are:

    Wood Group
    Doosan Babcock
    Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure

These contractors will deliver the SRP Process Facility at Sellafield valued at £1.5billion. The project involves, the construction of a welfare building, treatment plant, process building and tank farm.

    Other notable contractor activity

In second place for contractor activity in June were Vinci Construction, awarded two projects, valued at £253million. Their Ringway/Eurovia Group arm was awarded a scheme worth £252 million from Highways England.

Costain sit in 3rd place after an award from United Utilities worth £160 million which as a result, boosted their total to £176 million.

Kier’s quantity of contract awards has not decreased. For instance, in June they won 13 projects, similarly, in May they won 12. However, the value of projects has dropped significantly. The total value of projects won in June was £63million, in May, it was £397million. Therefore, they have subsequently seen a drop of 85% in value of project awards month on month.

Despite a less lucrative month for Kier, they still hold the top position in the rolling 12-month period with a total of 149 projects at a total value of £1.96billion. However, they are closely followed by Wates Construction, with 50 projects valued at £1.72billion.

    In conclusion

To conclude, June’s activity has been dominated by high value projects. The top three contractors won five projects between them, as opposed to May when the top three won a total of 19 projects. In June we have seen an increase of 42% on May in project awards values, largely due to the SRP Process Facility at Sellafield.
