What is a bid writer?
A bid writer, otherwise known as a tender writer, is a role within the construction industry which completes pre-qualification questionnaires and prepares tenders and proposals to win contracts and funding. Bid writers are becoming increasingly important and require an extensive knowledge and expertise of the industry.
Steps of bid writing
As bid writers prepare document to submit to tenders, they must follow a set steps to ensure they have the necessary information and documents to submit the bid. The below are some of the main steps a bid writer must follow.
- Identify ideal bid opportunities – either through tender databases or government portals like ‘Find a Tender’, the bid writer must identify the best tender opportunities on behalf of the company’s goals.
- Draft a proposal – it is the bid writer’s job to prepare a proposal that outlines the company’s ability to meet the criteria required in the Request for Proposal, and the company’s intended solution for the project.
- Competitor Research – bid writers must understand their competitors’ strengths and weaknesses, their current relationships within the industry, and projects they have won or lost to better understand how the bid writer can position their company as the better solution. Barbour ABI’s extensive data warehouse provides historical relationship data within the platform so bid writer’s have ease of access to this information.
- Compliance to RFP – the bid writer must ensure they are using the correct formatting and compliance.
- Bid Submission – once the appropriate documents are prepared and approved by the business and its partners, the bid writer submits the bid by the due date.
