Regional Profiles: Yorkshire & the Humber
The North Yorkshire boroughs, located within or near the Dales and the Moors, continue to dominate the region’s home improvement rankings – Hambleton coming out top in 2023 above neighbouring Harrogate. And, in line with the recent relative rise of home improvement in seaside locations, Scarborough retains its top 10 place.

Yorkshire & the Humber - Regional Home improvement apps per 1k private homes
The region saw a slightly bigger fall than the national average in applications over 2023 but has performed slightly better than most since 2019. This is broadly in keeping with the regional growth in house prices and economic activity. Earnings growth has also been slightly above the national average.
Despite a fall in 2023, the number of applications for garden works and buildings in the region was up 22% on the 2019 figure. Compared with the other northern regions, there was a slightly smaller fall in applications for extension since 2019, down 16%. But the number of applications for loft works was down from 2019 to 2023, by 4%.

Growth in applications for solar panels was among the strongest regionally in 2023. Applications were up by a third on the year and up two and a half times on the number in 2019. The number of applications citing insulation was also well up in 2023 standing at almost five time the number seen in 2019.
