Where are the majority of Solar Farm and Battery Energy Storage construction projects being built?

The East Midlands and Yorkshire stand out as leaders, hosting the highest concentration of solar farm and battery energy storage projects due to start in the next two years.

The clearest trend in the data is how dominant battery storage has become. In every region, there are far more battery-only projects than combined solar and storage schemes, showing a shift in where activity is concentrated.

Scotland shows this trend clearly. Although it has a high number of projects overall (117), most are battery-only (79).

In the South East, projects are more evenly split between solar and storage. Meanwhile, areas like the North East and Wales have fewer projects overall, suggesting there’s still room for growth.

Another key takeaway is that standalone solar is now rare. Most solar projects include battery storage, showing that combining the two has become the standard approach.

FAQs

The largest solar farm construction projects in the UK include major developments such as Tween Bridge Solar Farm, Great North Road Solar & Biodiversity Park, Springwell Solar Farm, Whitehouse Solar Farm, and One Earth Solar Farm. Together, these schemes represent billions of pounds of planned investment in renewable energy infrastructure in the next two years.

Barbour ABI is currently tracking 825 solar farm and battery energy storage construction projects due to start within the next two years, with a combined value of approximately £41bn.

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) stores electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. Stored energy can then be released when demand increases or renewable generation falls, helping to improve grid stability and energy security.

Battery energy storage projects help balance electricity supply and demand, reduce pressure on the national grid, support renewable energy generation, and improve the reliability of the UK’s energy infrastructure.

A Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) is a large-scale development that meets thresholds set by the UK government. Energy projects capable of generating more than 50MW of electricity are generally considered NSIPs and require development consent through the Planning Inspectorate process.

Solar farm construction projects create opportunities for contractors, consultants, civil engineering firms, electrical specialists, manufacturers, and material suppliers involved in design, construction, grid connections, energy storage systems, and long-term maintenance.
