G Park 1 London Docklands and Outer Dowsing Offshore Wind Farm are the top construction projects in UK 

According to Barbour ABI’s extensive planning data, the joint top construction projects in the UK are the G Park 1 London Docklands – 210MW Data Centre Campus – Project Olympus and the Outer Dowsing 1.5GW Offshore Wind Farm both with a value of £1.5bn.

  • 2nd place – £1bn Western Isles HDVC Scheme, Fanellan Farmhouse – Underground Cable
  • 3rd place – £900m East Anglia TWO Offshore 960MW Wind Farm

Key findings: top construction projects in the UK

  • Top 100 construction projects total £28.34bn.
  • Energy infrastructure leads by value. Utilities and power projects make up 25 of the top 100 and total £9.14bn, or 32% of the £28.34bn combined value. Offshore wind, HVDC cabling and battery storage account for most of it.
  • Residential has the most projects. It has 32 entries worth £6.88bn, or 24% of the total. Purpose-built accommodation and large-scale regeneration schemes dominate this sector.
  • Data centres continue to be a high value category. Five data centre projects total £3.02bn, 11% of the combined value. Two London Docklands campuses account for £2bn of that. 
  • London is the largest region by value and project count. It has 27 of the top 100 projects
  • The top 10 construction projects hold 29% of the total. They account for £8.09bn, and the top 20 reach 44%.

The rankings are based on projects by total value with a start date six months back through to six months forward. All construction sectors are eligible to be included.

Energy and residential have the most major projects, with commercial and retail close behind.

Energy infrastructure leads by value. Utilities (22 projects, £8.11bn) and Power & Utility (3 projects, £1.03bn) together make up 25 of the top 100 and £9.14bn, or 32% of the total. Offshore and onshore wind account for four projects worth £2.69bn, and battery storage accounts for eight projects worth £2.08bn.


Residential has the most projects. It has 32 entries worth £6.88bn (24%), mostly student accommodation and large regeneration schemes. Its average project value is about £215m, which is below the energy and commercial sectors.

Commercial and retail is the third-largest sector. It has 17 projects worth £6.26bn (22%), and data centres make up £3.02bn of that across five projects. This means data centres account for about 48% of the sector’s value and 11% of the overall total.

Beyond these three, no sector exceeds 7% of the total. Industrial has eight projects worth £1.93bn, and civil engineering has seven worth £1.37bn.
