The Home Improvement Index 2024

Regional Profiles: Wales

Outside of the North East, Wales ranks the lowest in the regional rankings for home improvement applications. Only Monmouthshire and the Vale of Glamorgan sit in the top half of local authorities across Britain based on the number of home improvement applications per 1,000 homes. Monmouthshire again tops the table in Wales. It has benefitted by its proximity to England and enjoyed strong growth ahead of the pandemic in part prompted by the ending of tolls on the Severn Crossing in 2018.

House prices in Wales saw a sharper than average drop in 2023, 2.5% down compared with 1.4% down across Britain. But they were up by 28.5% compared with the average across Britain of 22.8% between 2019 and 2023. Earnings growth was also slightly higher than the average over the period. But the cost-of-living crisis appears to have hit the home improvement market harder in this generally less prosperous part of Britain, with a 17% drop in applications.

For most types of home improvement Wales has seen weaker growth rates than the rest of Britain. But the market for loft works seems stronger in Wales than across much of Britain, as does the appetite for installing solar panels. Both have seen significant growth since 2019.
